As It Wishes

(John 3:8)

When a boisterous gale
races through the pines
and inspires their dance
in the radiant sky,
while the magnolia sways
with a jovial sigh—

Or when the still, small voice
of a whispering breeze
finds again stooped prophet
in the listening leaves,
in the quivering stillness
of theophanied trees—

Or when the terrible days
with those howling storms
come batter their bark,
leaving torn trunks to mourn
their dead, dangling limbs
so cruelly shorn—

Or when a lukewarm daze
blandly swallows them whole,
when sun stays in bed
and no tempest makes bold,
when all seems a stifling,
unending dull—

Then, that same Spirit,
who mothered of old,
hovers now yet again
to labor and mold,
till the fullness of Christ
in each one unfolds.
